The Popemobile will be staying in Philadelphia. Friday night at the 2016 Philadelphia Auto Show Black Tie Tailgate the Fiat that Pope Francis rode in while he was in town last fall was auctioned off. The winning bid came from Michael and Kate Chapman, owners of Chapman Auto Group, at $82,000. The Chapmans will put the car on display at the dealership in Horsham.

The second Fiat used during Pope Francis’s visit was on display for visitors to view for the entirety of the Auto Show. During the Black Tie Tailgate, nearly 4,500 guests enjoyed an open bar and top-notch culinary creations, while checking out some of the world’s finest automobiles. Proceeds from the auction benefited Catholic Charities, Mercy Hospice, Casa Del Carmen, the Schools of Special Education and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The black tie event also benefited the Division of Neurology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Phyllis and Darren Sudman, founders of Simon’s Fund, with their children Jaden and Sally.

Simon’s Fund held its annual gala, Simon’s Soiree, on Saturday at the Sheraton Hotel in Valley Forge in honor of Darren and Phyllis Sudman’s son Simon, who died suddenly of a heart defect in January 2005 at the age of 3. After Simon died, the family learned that children aren’t regularly checked for heart defects; that’s why they started Simon’s Fund with money raised from friends and Philadelphia-area businesses. The nonprofit goes to schools where it administers EKGs to students.

In the 11 years since the founding of Simon’s Fund, the organization has raised more than $1 million and provided free cardiac screenings to more than 11,000 kids. They have uncovered treatable, and in some cases potentially fatal, heart problems in nearly 100 kids. Saturday evening many of the organization’s friends and supporters came to the Sheraton Hotel to help raise more money toward their goals, as well as honor Dr. Brian Hainline, the Chief Medical Officer of the NCAA, with the Protect This Heart Award for his work recommending that NCAA sports require EKG exams.

Friends, family and supporters of Independence Mission Schools (IMS) gathered on Saturday night for IMS’s 2nd annual gala, “Dancing for Our Future Stars.” The dance competition supports the students of Independence Mission Schools, and featured 11 dazzling performances from dancing pairs at the Crystal Tea Room, including six nuns who performed as IHM “Sister Act” — with the lead nun playing Whoopi Goldberg’s character.

Prizes were awarded to all the dance contestants, with the gigantic mirror globes going to the biggest fundraiser. People’s Choice went to construction consultant Carol Tamburino, who raised $40,000 in votes. The Best Dance Performance Mirror Ball Trophy went to Judge’s Choice winner Marcus Allen, CEO Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Southeast Pennsylvania, and his dance partner, Amber Rawls, a former dancer for the Sixers. The overall competition winner, which was a combination of judges’ votes and money raised ($28,000) was Peter Panageas and K.O. Delmarcelle. All gala proceeds go to support Independence Mission Schools, a 501c3 organization that manages a network of 15 independent Catholic schools that provide a high-quality education for 4,700 students in some of the most under-resourced communities of Philadelphia.

Former Eagles player AJ Feeley (participating in DFODS with Nikki Thomas) and wife and former Olympian Heather Mitts. The couple is expecting their second child in a few weeks. Judge Maria McLaughlin and Charlotte McLaughlin cheered on Carol Tamburino, one of the dancers. Erin Elmore, Craig Spritzer, Alicia Daniels, Chris Wolfington (who danced in last year's competition and was a judge this year), and Lauren and Anthony Sembello. D.A. Seth Williams, a participant last year, sat at the judges table this year. Here, Tommy Geromichalos and Narissa Fell wait their turn on the dance floor. Tommy is known as "the little boy who saved St. Cyrill," which is now an IMS school. As a 6th grader with cystic fibrosis, he wrote a letter and asked the Make-A-Wish Foundation to save his school. When they turned him down, the community decided to step in and help save the school. K.O. Delmarcelle and Peter Panageas dance to "Rock Around The Clock." K.O. Delmarcelle and Peter Panageas had a pretty big cheering section. Carol Tamburino had a pretty big cheering section as well; the entire right side of the Crystal Tea Room filled with friends and family. Professional dancer Curt Foy and producer and anchor for Univision 65 Ilia Garcia. Elizabeth and Todd Herremans cheered on their friend AJ Feeley. They will become proud parents for the first time in a few weeks. Brent Celek and his wife, who are also expecting their first child, were also nearby. The best friends, who met while playing for the Eagles, are happily going to have children within a month of each other. Renee Chambers-Licaga and Quincy Harris, a graduate of one of the IMS schools and a member of the Fox 29 news team, won Best Presentation. Tony Azzaro and Kristen Johanson, KWY Newsradio, who danced "The History of Hip Hop," won Judge's Choice Runner-Up. Peter Panageas & K.O. Delmarcelle were the Grand Champions. The 14th annual Zarwin March Madness viewing party was held yesterday at the Crystal Tea Room. One of the largest networking events in the city — and certainly one of the longest — the event has grown from a tiny party held at the Zarwin Baum DeVito Kaplan Schaer Toddy, P.C. offices to a bash with more than 2,500 people stopping by throughout the day to network and watch the games in the ballroom. Guests enjoyed some of Philly’s favorite fare like cheesesteaks, pretzels, wings, hot dogs and pulled pork. This year there was also food from popular eateries like Little Lion, Vespers and Revolution Taco. The party also featured a beer garden with tastings from Bank and Bourbon, New Liberty Distillery/Millstone Spirits Group, New Liberty Distillery/Millstone Spirits Group and Golia vodka. The free event has always benefited Philabundance, but this year’s event also supported Chester nonprofit grocery store Fare & Square. There was an extensive silent auction and a live auction to raise funds, as well as a collection of canned food donations. To date, the event has raised close to $200,000 to support these efforts.
