The 2015 Marian Anderson Award was held last night at the Kimmel Center. Wynton Marsalis — trumpeter, composer, teacher, music educator, and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City — was this year’s recipient. Guests were welcomed by Nina Tinari, board chair, and the event was hosted by Soledad O’Brien.

Marsalis was honored with performances by Kim Burrell, Lalah Hathaway, Misty Copland,  and Robert Garland, as well as local performers, then was joined on stage by the Wynton Marsalis Septet at the conclusion of the event. The Marian Anderson Award is given to entertainers who have contributed to society, which exemplifies what Marsalis has done in his lifetime. After Hurricane Katrina, Marsalis helped create a star-studded concert to raise much needed funds for his hometown of New Orleans and it’s residents.

The evening began with a cocktail party, and guests dined on a delicious dinner by Garces Catering in Commonwealth Plaza decorated by Evantine. The Gala Dinner Chair was Carol B. Tinari, with sponsorship from Wells Fargo, City of Philadelphia and PECO.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show kicked off its 39th year with a glitzy gala on Wednesday night. Ellen Caplan, chair of this year’s show, welcomed guests to the event before introducing Timothy Rub, the museum’s CEO. He presented the 2015 Craft Show Awards to 10 of the outstanding artists participating in the show, determined by a panel of judges. Each winner received $1,000 from the sponsor of each individual award, with the Best of Show winner — Agnieszka Winograd, a jewelry designer — receiving $1,500. Presented by The Women’s Committee and The Craft Show Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the craft show is the single largest fund-raiser for the museum. More 1,000 applicants apply to show at the annual event, but only 195 are chosen. Proceeds from the show support educational programs and exhibitions and fund purchases of art and contemporary crafts for the permanent collection. To date, the committee has raised over $10.9 million for the museum. The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is at the Pennsylvania Convention Center through Sunday.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Gala

hughe-940x540

On November 14, 2015, The Greater Philadelphia Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) honored me(!) with the 2015 Humanitarian Award for my advocacy in promoting AFSP’s overall mission: to end the silence and reduce the stigma around mental illness and suicide.

When Garden Wellington (PR for the AFSP) approached me a few years back, asking me to get involved in the organization by photographing the Out of the Darkness Walk, I turned her down. I told her I was too busy. But the truth was that I didn’t want to face my past. She persisted, and a few months later asked me again, saying the organization could use a little HughE love on a subject, that at the time rarely was covered in the media. I told her I’d get back to her.

I realized I could help others by telling my story, when I struggled with the issue in my 20s. I then told my story on my blog and on social media. They tell me that with my help over the past three years they have double the number of people who come to their annual walk, held in October; this past year 5,000 walkers participated.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is the leader in the fight against suicide. They fund research, offer educational programs, advocate for public policy, and support those affected by suicide. The 350 guests who attended enjoyed dinner, dancing and the most amazing silent auction from generous sponsors. Thanks to everyone who supported the event by attending, or making a donation. We’re saving lives.

Monday night Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney celebrated his installment as the 99th mayor at an inauguration party at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. It wasn’t your normal Inaugural Ball: It was billed as an invite-only “block party” with nine food trucks, picnic tables and every sports mascot in the city dancing on stage with DJs Jerry Blavat and Patty Jackson to the tunes of the Sounds of Philadelphia. Before the general admission block party, the new mayor held a fundraiser on the terrace level where guests paid $5,000 each to attend, with proceeds going to the Fund for the School District. It was announced at the event that $650,000 had been raised so far.

The Little Lion Grand Opening Party

The Little Lion officially opened yesterday on Chestnut St. in the old Haru. On Wednesday night, owners Chris Younge and Jason Dills hosted a party for the press and friends. At the soiree, cocktails were served, as well as an array of tasty delights from the menu executed by Little Lion executive chef Sean Ciccarone formerly of Pennsylvania 6, Farmer’s Cabinet and the Mainland Inn.

Chef  Ciccarone told me he once worked at Haru a decade ago and was pleased with the renovations of the historic building. He told me he was influenced by the southern cooking he did in Charleston, South Carolina, and Jacksonville, Florida, at earlier gigs he’s had.

I think you’ll agree he’s captured the magic of Southern cooking in his fried chicken, mac and cheese and the most delicious Brussels sprouts you’ll ever have. Originally the Brussels sprouts were a side dish to the beef short ribs, but they tested so good they’re now a standalone dish. There’ll be 16 draft lines with craft beers, draft cocktails and draft lattes all available. Currently Little Lion is open for lunch and dinner, and soon will server brunch on the weekends.

Last night Einstein Healthcare Network celebrated it’s 150th anniversary with a sold-out gala at the National Constitution Center hosted by Seinfeld star Jason Alexander and featuring a performance by Diana Ross.

Einstein got its start in 1866 as a 22-bed Jewish Hospital. Today the Einstein Healthcare Network has nearly 9,000 employees and operates three acute care hospitals — Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia, Einstein Medical Center Elkins Park, Einstein Medical Center Montgomery — along with MossRehab, two physician companies, and a series of outpatient centers throughout Philadelphia and Montgomery County.

Guests enjoyed delicious food by Brulee Catering, and danced to the sounds of Honey & Vinyl, as well as enjoyed performances from the UArts’ Vocal Performance Department including a performance by Rumble, an alternative drum ensemble that marked the beginning of the program where Lawrence S. Reichlin, chair of the board of directors, and Barry R. Freedman, president and CEO of Einstein Healthcare Network, welcomed the guests. Chairpersons for the gala were Alison and Marc Feldman, Susan and Leonard Klehr, Jill and Jon Powell and Nancy and Marc Shrier.

Hair O’ the Dog 2016

The 22nd Hair O’ the Dog (HOD) took place Saturday night at the Crystal Tea Room in Center City. Nearly 2,000 people attended the event where a portion of the proceeds will benefit THON, Penn State’s Dance Marathon, and the largest student run philanthropy in the world which benefits pediatric cancer.

Rob Molinaro and Dan Cronin started the first party with a few friends in the weeks following New Year’s Eve; the event has since grown into a must-attend event and attracts guests from all walks of life. In the past decade Buffy Harakidas has joined the team as director of marketing for Chorus Communications and creative director for HOD. She envisioned a jungle-themed party complete with zebras, camels and tigers dotting the venue, as well as stilt walkers, break dancers and a girl on roller skates mixing with the crowd.

At the height of the party a storm of confetti fell over the dance floor, showering the nonstop dancers as drummers joined the headlining band of the evening, Go Go Gadjet, on stage. This year the event drew a very fashionable crowd, where women wore the hottest designs including the popular cutout dress and midriff top. A light buffet was served, as well as a top-shelf open bar. Bottle service areas were located throughout the venue with white lounges and lit cube tables. There were also several photo booths, and the event’s title sponsor, SugarHouse had a “wheel of fortune” for guests to win prizes.

Rob Molinaro and Dan Cronin, founders of Hair of the Dog and Chorus Communications, with Buffy Harakidas, director of marketing, Chorus Communications. Troyonna and Andrew Nelson DJ Mike Adam, 96.5 AMP and wife Sarah Arroyo. Wendy Hamilton, general manager, and Dan Stevenson, external affairs consultant, both at Sugar House Casino. Remember about four years ago I took a photo of Kate Beaver in an orange, gravity-defying dress and it went Philly Viral (The Daily News picked up the dress story, she was on WMMR and on Fox 29's Good Day chatting about the dress and my photo). The following two years she was somewhat demure. This year she's kicked the door open again with this JLo-inspired dress and her Fireball colored hair. Donnie Martelette and Dr. Frank Mazzotta Shemeka and Shedine Sinclair. Diana Venus and Matt Mitchell. Tony Bruno and Robin Austin (Robin bought her velvet gown on Ebay, cut it short and added the lacy fringe on the bottom and the sleeves.) Guests danced to Go Go Gadjet in the main room, while other rooms entertained with The Business Band, DJ’s Jason Weiss and Mike Galioto, and a live performance by Felicia Punzo. Amanda McAdams and Rebekah Ashenfelter. Earl and Andrea Bull enjoy attending Hair O' the Dog every year. Classic style: Stephanie Sorce and Cynthia King-Webb wearing a flowery fascinator. Susan Greco, Monica Miraglilo and Evelyn Wade. Melissa Kraut, Jenna Lamania, Mary Kay Sideris, and Sharon Holden with the Electric Men. Dapper snapper: Joey Del Palazzo Robert Metzfield and Cassandra Hayes Jason Lewis, AmeriHealth Caritas, and Anthony Barone, 1919 Market Street, one of the sponsors for Hair O' the Dog. Chi-Chi Enigwe, Sharrie Williams, 6ABC Anchor and Carmena Ayo-Davies, 3BG Marketing Solutions. Regina Matozzo, Bernadette O'Laughlin, Frankie Graz and Kristen Weber Classic style: Torrie Williams, producer at Fox 29, and Phil Duckson. Amber Joi, Marisa Montague and Hacina Saadi. Best-dressed man Rigo Eyenga. John Geverd and Jen Sherlock looking fabulous in her Le Bella Donna dress and Jimmy Choo shoes, with the Notorious DOG, Hair of the Dog mascot. One of the best-dressed couples of the evening - Vernon and Vivian Ray Lou Maglio and Alyssa Weisberg. Unlike the Academy Ball, which is next week, women at Hair O' the Dog may end up wearing the same dress as someone else. This dress was very popular and at least three other women were wearing similar outfits, but no one wore it better than Alyssa, especially with the dapper Mr. Maglio on her arm in his velvet coat and bowtie. They're my pick for best-dressed of the gala.
