On Thursday night 5,000 people brought their own white tables, tablecloths, chairs and meals to take part in the 5th anniversary of Dîner en Blanc, a pop-up picnic and worldwide epicurean phenomenon. Local residents and friends Natanya DiBona and Kayli Moran saw the chic pop-up Dîner en Blanc take place in Paris and Montreal and, when it moved to New York in 2011, they wanted to be a part of it and thought it would be great in Philadelphia.

The first Philadelphia Dîner en Blanc was held in August 2012 for 1,300 guests at Logan Fountain. The destination was a secret until the guests were led there by a Dîner en Blanc table leader. This year guests had the option of bringing their own food or ordering beforehand and picking up their meal up from caterers on the scene. This year’s caterers were 33rd Street Hospitality Catering, Reading Terminal Market and Luke Palladino Catering. Apothic Wines, as the official wine sponsor of the 2016 US Diner en Blanc series, gave out wine samples to diners. Entertainment for the evening included Hot Club Philly, the band that performed at the very first Dîner en Blanc Philadelphia, The Soul of Philly featuring Tiffany Jones, DJ Sean Smoove, roving musicians, artists, the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts, and the Mad Beatz drumline.

Guests approached the Philadelphia Art Museum and the site of the 2016 Diner en Blanc was revealed: the Steps of the Art Museum. Earthen Johnson, Yvonne Osirim, Jessica Perry and Wesley Allen wave their napkins, signifying the start of dinner. Marquita Treadwell, a Diner en Blanc table leader, decided for the 5th anniversary her table called for something extra special — a chandelier. Natanya DiBona, co-host of Diner en Blanc, Michael and Crista Bateman. Douglas Famy, Keith Davis and Brad Strong. Ivy Harris and Quincy Harris, Fox 29, the Q Show. This was one of the most popular photo spots during the evening. Carlie Newcomb, Joy Parham-Thomas, Shanel Sherese and Tara Lessard. Jason Fallon and Danielle Episcopo. At 9:15 p.m. 5,000 sparklers lit up the night to signify the opening of the dance floor as the sounds of Viva la Vida from Coldplay enveloped the atmosphere. Kayli Moran, co-chair of Diner en Blanc and Patrick McGovern. There was a strict no swimming policy in the fountain, as was done at the first Diner en Blanc location (Logan Square), but no one said don't dangle your feet in the fountain as Marisa Magnatta and Rob Schreiber did. Sharon Johnson and Patrice Berkley. First time attendees Janice and Hudson Austin told me that Diner en Blanc surpassed their expectation of fun. Dinner En Blanc Philly Lauren Krantz and Amanda Cassidy head home after a great time.
